In close collaboration with Malba—a renowned artist specializing in intricate engravings—Herman Knives has created a unique knife that captures attention not only with its quality but also with an extraordinary, hand-engraved design. The motif adorning the handle pays homage to the defense of Lviv in 1920, a historically significant event etched into the annals of courage and resilience.

The engraving, inspired by the original emblem of the squadron designed by pilot Elliot Chess, depicts a Kraków rogatywka—a symbol of Tadeusz Kościuszko—along with two crossed scythes, set against the backdrop of the United States flag. This unique combination of Polish and American symbols honors both the Polish inhabitants of Lviv and the American volunteers who fought side by side with the Poles. Among them was Merian C. Cooper—the squadron organizer and future director of "King Kong." This story, rich in heroism and extraordinary figures, has been encapsulated in the handle of the knife, serving as a reminder of courage and the strength of solidarity.

This knife is a remarkable tribute to history and artisanal craftsmanship. Each piece is one of a kind, making it a coveted item for collectors and those who value objects with a soul and a deeper message. Thanks to the use of the highest quality materials, such as Damasteel or M390, and precise craftsmanship, this knife not only fulfills its functions perfectly but also serves as an elegant symbol of timeless values.

This unique version of the "Slim" knife by Herman Knives is not only a testament to the brand's technological and artistic excellence but also an exceptional bridge between the past and the present. It is a distinctive object that can adorn any collection while serving as a personal reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the strength of the human spirit.

From the Creator of the engraving:

The engraving work on the knife tells the story of the battles defending Lviv against the attack of the Red Army in August and September 1920 during the Polish-Soviet War.

In the 1920 war, the defense of Lviv— a city-symbol for Poland— held particular significance in the battles on the Southern Front. In 1658, Pope Alexander VII granted the city the motto "Semper Fidelis"—Always Faithful: Leopolis semper Fidelis. This motto reflects the belief that the city is uniquely tied to Poland, its history, and the fates of its generations, and stands as a symbol of resilience and invincibility.

A crucial role in the fight against the Red Army was played by the city's Polish inhabitants, volunteers (around 20,000 people), and the air force— the 7th Fighter Squadron named after Tadeusz Kościuszko, also known as the Kościuszko Squadron. This squadron included American volunteers, with a total of 20 American pilots recruited by Merian C. Cooper, the squadron’s organizer. After the war, Cooper became a renowned director and screenwriter, best known for his 1933 film King Kong. Cooper himself appeared in the film, piloting a plane that attacked the giant ape.

The emblem of the Kościuszko Squadron was designed by pilot Elliot Chess. It features a red Kraków-style rogatywka (a four-cornered military cap worn by Tadeusz Kościuszko during the 1794 uprising) and two crossed scythes (symbolizing the peasants who fought alongside Kościuszko) against the backdrop of the United States flag.

On August 16, 1920, the pilots were ordered to stop the advancing 1st Cavalry Army of Budyonny that was approaching Lviv. Cooper, along with other pilots, actively conducted reconnaissance missions and engaged enemy units, firing machine guns and dropping grenades.

During the campaign, the squadron flew a total of 462 combat missions, spending 682 hours in the air. Five pilots lost their lives in action.

By tying up Budyonny's formidable cavalry army on its outskirts, Lviv played a historic role and ensured Poland's victory in the simultaneous Battle of Warsaw—regarded as one of the 20 most significant battles in world history. This battle halted Stalin’s Red Army and the spread of Bolshevik communism into Western Europe.
