Bearing system: Custom-made ceramic ball bearings by Herman Knives

New improved bearing system.

Washers made of M390 powder metallurgy steel further enhance the already exceptional operation of our knives. Every stage of production has been optimized to ensure even greater precision, durability, and, most importantly, the smoothness of our knives.

Washer manufacturing process:

M390 steel is machined in-house on our Swiss-type lathe Citizen Cincom A20, where the bar stock is processed and pre-drilled.

Washer dimensions: Inner diameter 5.05 mm, outer diameter 11.95 mm; (for Bee and Micro Sting models: outer diameter 9.95 mm).

25 mm-long rods undergo vacuum heat treatment to 60 HRC, reducing material stress and minimizing the risk of deeper blade scratches and ceramic ball fractures.

After hardening, washers are machined using EDM (Electro Discharge Machining) on our Mitsubishi MV1200R wire EDM machine, allowing precise inner hole execution.

They are then wire-cut into 0.6 mm-thick slices, and final wire processing minimizes surface roughness.

Final manual lapping, up to a 4000-grit finish, gives the washers an almost mirror-like surface, ensuring even smoother bearing operation.

All these processes are carried out entirely in-house by Herman Knives.

Tungsten carbide stop pin

New, improved pivot with DLC coating. We have refined the pivot construction, elevating its precision and the smoothness of the knife’s operation to an even higher level.
It consists of three elements:

A phosphor bronze bushing (a highly durable material with self-lubricating properties). It is precisely fitted to the hole in the blade, which is also machined in-house using our EDM machine. This eliminates all unnecessary play, ensuring flawless blade rotation through the resulting plain bearing.

A seven-petal clover-shaped screw – prevents rotation within the construction.

Torx T20 – secured with an easily removable Loctite for adjustability. If adjusting, be sure to reapply the same type of thread locker.

The screws are made of vacuum-hardened stainless steel. All three components are produced in-house by Herman Knives on our Swiss-type automatic lathe.

Bearings with increased stability

Based on years of experience, the new bearings feature a caged design with 16 ceramic balls. Their well-thought-out and tested structure effectively prevents ball displacement while ensuring optimal smoothness of operation.

Simple, isn’t it?

New original box including a microfiber cloth, Pruciak Protector Glide for Herman oil, and a dedicated stainless steel screwdriver with DLC coating manufactured in-house by Herman Knives.

My name is Bartosz Herman. I specialize in handcrafting knives - and now also pens - based on my own designs and custom orders. I strive to ensure that each piece is unique, comfortable to use, and pleasing to the eye of its owner. I am continuously working to improve my skills so that my creations become even better. I invite you to take a look at the results of my work.

The "Bee" series from Herman Knives is a blend of sporty elegance and aggressive dynamics. This collection stands out with its small, yet impressively designed blades, achieving a maximum blade size when the knife is closed and discreetly tucked away in a pocket. Each knife in this series is charismatic and unique, reflected in its unique, sporty design.

Importantly, "Bee" combines advanced materials with masterful craftsmanship. High-quality steels, such as M390 and M398 from Bohler, CPM MagnaCut, Damasteel RWL34, Damascus steel, and Damax from Alleima, merge reliability and durability with aesthetic excellence. Each knife in this series is an example of exquisite workmanship, offering users both comfort and a secure grip.

Bee is a knife series that attracts attention and distinctly stands out from the crowd. It's perfect for those who seek not just a tool but also a work of art that combines functionality and elegance. It is the choice for those who value quality, style, and the dynamic, sporty nature of a knife. "Bee" from Herman Knives symbolizes modern design, reflecting the spirit of dynamism and innovation in every detail.

At Herman Knives, we have always focused not only on the precision and quality of our products but also on their beauty and functionality. This has required a lot of patience, consistency, technology, experience, knowledge and passion. Our knives were meant to be a significant and enjoyable element, not just in your collections but also as an indispensable companion in your pocket, accompanying you every day. Today, the time has come for us to introduce our next creation, long awaited by us – the Epika pen – which can complement the EDC of each of you.

Like any ambitious project, our Epika was born in pain. We were in uncharted waters, which presented us with numerous challenges. This project consumed an immense amount of creative work. We spent hundreds of hours designing, prototyping on 3D printers, and making individual parts from titanium, hardened stainless steel, and phosphor bronze.

The biggest challenge for us was creating a unique locking system. Many concepts were tested by us, leading to the selection of the one we considered the best, which we named: the Herman Ceramic Rotary Locking System. Our system consists of three 2.5mm ceramic balls for locking, five 1mm balls for bearing the rotational movement of the clip, and one 2mm ball to limit the range of rotational movement. We made the frame of this system from phosphor bronze, which is a very durable material and also has self-lubricating properties.

Another unique feature that sets our Epika apart from other pens on the market is the creation of a single, contoured body, made from Grade 5 titanium. It has no joints and is very ergonomic. To achieve this effect, we decided to purchase a Swiss-type lathe, and it turned out that despite such an advanced machine, making such a long, solid titanium body was another significant obstacle, which we fortunately managed to overcome.

The clip – simple, right? We thought so too. Ergonomic, of course, and meeting our aesthetic criteria. The challenges began when we got the idea to combine this ergonomics and aesthetics with the function of the HCRLS - Herman Ceramic Rotary Locking System. Following the principle that what is difficult we do immediately, and what is impossible takes us three days, we added the concept that the clip, along with the body of the Herman Ceramic Rotary Locking System, should be made from a single solid piece of titanium, without any joints, screws, pins, etc. Don't even ask… it may have taken us a bit more than three days, but we did it!

We searched for what we considered the perfect refill for a long time, and because we like challenges, we decided that "the sky is the limit" and… we mean that literally. The Fisher Space Pen refill that we use in the Epika accompanied NASA astronauts during space missions and writes underwater, as well as in any orientation, and simply put, it is very pleasant to write with.

We want our pen to create your story with every use, regardless of time and place, plot, and characters. Hence the idea for the name, because "epic" (Epika in the Polish language) as a literary genre encompasses all these elements.

We also want, just like our knives, each Epika to be unique and exceptional, just like each of you is unique and exceptional.
